On September 23, 1982, Emma was born to an English mother and a Jamaican-Trinidadian father. She grew up in East London, England, with her three younger siblings: Katie, Rachelle, and Charlotte. They were all raised in Plaistow by their mom, who was employed at the multinational investment firm Morgan Stanley. Because of this, Grede was introduced to finance at a young age. Emma went to the London College of Fashion to study business. However, she left the institution and never went back after landing an internship with Gucci.

Emma started her career in fashion as she was very enthusiastic about the fashion industry, and therefore she got enrolled in the London College of Fashion in 1997.
